Project Status
The 2007 Collaborative Research on Oregon Ocean Salmon project (ProjectCROOS) has received funding from both the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) and the Oregon Disaster Federal Relief Funds. These funds were directed to the Oregon Salmon Commission to be utilized toward administering this unique joint industry-university research project to identify salmon stocks in the ocean. To date, over 145 salmon fishermen representing 11 counties have been trained in sampling protocols. 91 vessel operators and 59 crew members have participated in sampling this year and received compensation. Six port liaisons have also been hired to help train project participants, collect data from the fishermen, and provide a communication link between the fishermen and the scientists. So far this year, over 3,600 samples have been collected and are in the process of being genetically analyzed.
